My card was declined

What to do when a charge fails — update your saved card from the booking page, try another card, or contact your bank.

A decline means a charge on the booking failed — either the host tried to accept your request and the charge didn't go through (the request stays alive), or a balance charge failed. The booking shows a Your card was declined banner, you get a Payment issue notification, and we email you a link to update your card.

What to do

  1. Open the email and tap the update-card link, or open the booking from My bookings.
  2. Enter the new card details and tap Save new card — you'll see "New card saved — the host can retry the charge."
  3. If the new card also declines, try a different card entirely.
  4. If a second card fails, contact your bank — declines are often fraud-protection blocks on online or out-of-state charges, which the bank can clear in minutes.

Common decline reasons

  1. Fraud block — your bank flagged the charge as unusual. A quick call clears it.
  2. Insufficient funds — check your balance or use a different card.
  3. Expired card — update to a current card.
  4. Incorrect billing address — match the address on file with your bank exactly.

Updating your card doesn't re-run the charge automatically — the host is notified and can retry, or the failed balance charge is retried against the new card.

Never pay a host outside of BirdDog to work around a decline — off-platform payments aren't protected.

The host sets the deposit — No deposit, 25% up front, or 50% up front — and any balance auto-charges 30 days before the trip.
