Section 180 tax deduction check

Run the 5-step soil-fertility deduction check to see eligibility and an estimated deduction range.

The Section 180 deduction lets you deduct the residual soil fertility built into the purchase price of recently acquired farmland. The check at the tax check walks you through five steps and tells you whether you're eligible, with an estimated deduction range.

The 5 steps

  1. Property — "Which property is this check for?": select the claimed parcel. (The subhead notes Section 180 generally applies to productive farmland above a minimum acreage, acquired within a set number of years.)
  2. Actively farmed — "Is this land actively farmed or ranched?": Yes — it's actively farmed or ranched or No — it isn't.
  3. Acquisition date — "When did you acquire it?": pick the exact date.
  4. Price paid per acre — "What did you pay per acre?": enter your cost basis (the parcel's label, acreage, and state show in the step subhead for reference).
  5. Land use — "How is this land primarily used?": when your parcel's record has cover or zoning data, the answer is prefilled ("Prefilled from your property record — change it if this looks wrong"); otherwise pick it yourself. Then click Check eligibility.

The results page

If you qualify, the results page reads "This property appears to qualify" and shows the estimated deduction range, eligible acres, and the soil-assessment fee — plus a "How we got there" breakdown and the next steps (order the soil assessment, agronomist certification, CPA-ready report). If not, you'll see which gate the property failed, with Check another property and Try a grant search instead links.

Every check is saved on Your tax deduction checks — click View results on any card to revisit the full results and breakdown.

Estimates provide a general idea only — the actual deduction is determined by soil testing and certified agronomist review. Consult your CPA before filing.
